Theories of a Leadership

Leadership can be described In different ways sometime the focus Is on leadership style wile at other times the focus is on the characteristics of a leader. Another way to look at this is the types of leadership are by organizational levels. Leading at different levels of the organization require leader to use a different approach at each level. Therefore, it is important for leaders to understand the different types of leadership and what they need to do to be an effective leader at each level.

Although complex rganization may have many levels, listed here are the basic types of leadership based on organizational levels: Leaders come in all shapes and sizes. They all have their own way of doing things including their leadership style. Numerous different styles of leadership theories exist Including: great man, situational, trait, contingency, behavioral, participative, managerial also known as transactional, and relationship or transformational (Robinson, 2013).

Each one of these leadership theories has their own distinctive set of strengths and weaknesses. Leadership theories According to Cherry (2005) brief definitions of the different styles of leadership theories are classified as: The Great man theory is believed to be inherent where great leaders are born, and not made. Situational theories are leaders who choose the best course of action based upon situational variables. Trait is similar to great man where a person inherits certain qualities and traits that make them better suited to leadership.

Contingency will focus on particular variables pertaining to the environment that could determine which approach is better appropriately for the ituation. Behavioral focuses mainly on the leader’s action and not on mental qualities or Internal states. Participative leader Is one that takes the Input of others into account and not just their own input. Managerial or transactional leadership are leader who focuses on the role of supervision, organization and group performance, and their leadership Is based on a system of rewards and punishments.

Lastly relationship or transformational focus upon the connections formed between leaders and followers often have high ethical and moral standards. These leaders also want each person to fulfill his or her potentlal_ Situational leadership is probably the best style of them all, which has the most aspects. The leader I admire the most works according to the situations. The way things are today, anything can happen and we need a leader who will gulde us directly by giving direct decisions. A leader who takes decision and changes her strategy according to the situation is the type of leader we need.

The majority of managers and coordinators may use this approach as well depending on the circumstances that arise. By using systematic measures for the unexpected, this allows leadership team from each level to become more efficiencies and effectiveness. The leader I admire demonstrate some of the other leading theories that can affect any situation. Depending on the situation she have demonstrated participative, managerial or transactional leadership relationship or transformational Normally when crises arise the blame is often placed on leaders.

Many times these leaders have little or no control over the matter of the business. Therefore, when determining a leader’s effectiveness in situations one must notice how they react to what they can control. When discussing with my mentor who has good leadership skill about a previous situation, she has a tendency of knowing the right words to say. A customer was very upset and out of control and she was able to handle the situations whereas the customers left the store happy.

If she had not had the leadership Evaluating my leadership skill, I am more like my admire leader she possess many of the leadership skill that I have shown from previous management ositions. The different type of theories all have their own features which at some point is being use according to the situation. Communicating is the vital key to any situation regardless of which leadership you may possess. Although, some people are not talkative as other we as a leader sometime have to step up to the plate and let him or her know that you are there for them.

In conclusion the different style of leadership is demonstrated and focuses on the different characteristic of a leader. Leading at different levels of the organization are required leader to use a different pproach at each level. Leader at different levels of the organization require leader to use different approach for each level. We learned that it is important for leaders to understand the different types of leadership and what they need to do to be an effective leader at each level.
